Penmarin Books launched into being in 1987 as a book packager—a literary agency that acquires, edits, designs, and produces trade books for marketing and distribution by major publishing houses. Our company was comprised of editors, designers, and marketers who had worked in New York and San Francisco publishing and wanted to take away from it the best of that experience and leave behind the worst. Our vision was to find and develop works that were fresh, vital, eclectic, and delightful to the eye and to the mind, and to give them and their authors the attentive care that would give birth to books sublime in content and form. Guided by this Platonic Idea, Penmarin Books thrived. Yet, because of contractual dependence on publisher-clients for promotion and marketing, we and our authors felt let down in many instances, and disappointed by lack of attention and lackluster sales. The publisher frequently cut the author out of the decision making entirely. So we began to publish under our own imprint, working closely with our authors, focusing on editing and producing our books well, and aggressively publicizing and promoting them to all audiences.
