Thinking Your Way to Success

Have you ever noticed how some people tend to shorten or tighten time in their minds? They have the belief that there is just not enough time available to do what they have to do, and by believing this, they simply create more stress for themselves — and others around them.

The concept of time is individual. Everyone experiences time differently because of circumstance. Time can seem to pass slowly in some circumstances, like when you’re in an uncomfortable situation, or quickly in others, like when the situation is a pleasant one.

We humans have devised the system of arranging our lives by the numbers on the clock. We’ve divided days into twenty-four equal units we call hours, which are composed of sixty equal units we call minutes and so on. We have artificially fragmented time into bits and pieces to our detriment. Certainly there are many things — trains, planes, machinery — which must run on closely timed schedules or they wouldn’t work at all, but do you really need to run like a machine? Do you think you experience time in the same way at every hour of the day? Does it really matter if you don’t get the laundry folded by 8:00pm, or the car washed this morning? Will the world actually end if you’re a few minutes behind?

While it is always nice to accomplish the tasks one sets out to perform in a timely manner, we can’t all be like the Swiss. The point is: things have a way of getting done regardless and worrying does not help, it just slows things down.

Thinking of failure is detrimental to your chances of success. When you are anxious, nothing flows properly, and things like decision-making, that would otherwise be easy, become strenuous. You forget details because your mind is congested, and the decisions you make in such a state may not be the best. You become entangled in a web of negativity, thinking, “Nothing is going my way!” And thinking this way will eventually manifest that exact scenario. On the other hand, not worrying eliminates a lot of stress and actually helps you get things done because you stay calm!

When I was taking my dentistry exams, which lasted five days and were potentially very stressful, I just kept thinking, “I have everything I need, I have the information, I have the equipment, it is easy for me, and I enjoy it.”  And I did enjoy it! After the exams, people came and told me that I looked like I was having fun. By maintaining a positive outlook the five days passed quickly and pleasantly, it became amazingly easy for me to take those exams!

So think positively — when you’re busy, think, “I have enough time, I have everything I need to succeed”, and so on — this is the energy of thought. Thinking this way brings a shift of consciousness that helps you stay focused and efficient. Time will seemingly stretch and you will accomplish your goals. By maintaining a positive outlook everything you need to do becomes a little easier.

Don’t create stress for yourself by concentrating on negativity or worrying about failure. Keeping a positive attitude will help you far more than worrying ever will.
