Media transcription
Media transcription companies are involved in subtitling and captioning of
movies and TV programs. Subtitles are nothing but text formats of the dialogs spoken in films and TV programs. These are usually shown at the lower part of the screen. They can be the text form of the speech in the programs or they can include additional information to help deaf viewers to understand better what they are watching. At film festivals, subtitles are shown on a separate panel below the main screen. This saves the film-maker from making a captioned version for may be just one show. Subtitling for the deaf and dumb is called as closed captioning in the United States. Due to rising demand in having subtitled version of programs, transcription services providing media transcriptioning are full of transcriptioning work. The big studios like Fox & CNN in the US send the audio records & files of their programs to the transcriptioning firms in India. Mostly, these are programmes, that are yet to be shown. The work of the transcriptionists is to listen to them, translate them into text files by use of some text based software and then send it back to the studios. The transcripts are then hosted on Web.Back in the United States ,where media transcription has already become popular, there is terrific demand for media transcriptionists. But
in India the media transcription rage has just about started. This only shows
why India is having so much of untapped potential in this field. Some of the big production houses in the US have tied up with local Indian transcriptioning establishments. For such companies,it has been a great time since then as they are reaping the benefit of being one of the few first movers in this industry. Also, these companies become experienced enough to transcribe interviews, conferences, discussions etc. For candidates wanting to break into this field, the sky is indeed the limit. It is enough for one to be a graduate with good command over English to be eligible for training in media
transcriptioning. While some institutes do provide training for aspirants,it is
better to acquire on job training from a small transcriptioning company before jumping to full scale media transcriptioning jobs.
